Ego City / Issue 3 directly from Winnipeg, Canada by Reetbot

This zine is the third issue it contains photos of the graffiti scene in Winnipeg, Canada. The package also included some stickers by Reetbot. The zine size of this issue changed it is a 5 [wide] by 8 [height] it contains some photocopies in color the rest are black and white. All photos are by Reetbot and DAKO, every second page is upside down. Still it is awesome and very well done. The themes of the issues depends on the ideas that Mr. Reetbot haves at that time [this makes it even better]. I found out about this magazine directly from Reetbot and well I asked him if he could send me the issue. Kindly enough he did. Why i asked for this zine? Cause it is a pretty good and original idea. Very unique and special simple in the making but with so much creativity that I couldnt resist it. 😀

Writing over Murakami.

A friend [Aslan] sent me today an article he found on Boing Boing talking about a billboard that was written [as in graffiti writing, HA!] but this wasnt a just a billboard [well it was] but thing is it was announcing the Takashi Murakami exhibit at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art. I was like, ok? Why is this so special? [he always send me something interesting] I keep reading the article and it turns out that two well known graffiti writters of that area named AUGER and REVOK did KaiKai and KiKi his characters plus their names on the billboard.

Hey! Now don’t go around LA trying to find it cause you won’t find it. The billboard it is on its way to Tokyo as we speak [maybe it is already there]. Mr. Murakami asked for the billboard to be removed. No! It is not that he didnt liked to be bombed. It is all the way around. When his people found the photo on the internet and told him about the new decoration of the billboard he liked it so much that he asked that the billboard was removed and shipped to his studio back in Tokyo. Talk about first impressions. I can only imagine this guys right now they must be so high [as in happiness very very happy] . The billboard only lasted two days so not many people got to see the new writings. But dont worry I have a pic here for you. By the way it looks amazing love the colors and the characters are so kawaii [cute] as always japanese style … all about the cuteness.

^^!

Who is Takashi Murakami?
[just in case you were wondering why all the excitement]

Takashi Murakami (村上隆, Murakami Takashi?, born 1 February 1962 in Tokyo) is a prolific contemporary Japanese artist who works in both fine arts media, such as painting, as well as digital and commercial media. He attempts to blur the boundaries between high and low art. He appropriates popular themes from mass media and pop culture, then turns them into thirty-foot sculptures, “Superflat” paintings, or marketable commercial goods such as figurines or phone caddies.

Murakami attended the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, initially studying more traditionalist Japanese art. He pursued a doctorate in Nihonga, a mixture of Western and Eastern styles dating back to the late 19th century. However, due to the mass popularity of anime and manga, Japanese styles of animation and comic graphic stories, Murakami became disillusioned with Nihonga, and became fixated on otaku culture, which he felt was more representative of modern day Japanese life.

This resulted in Superflat, the style that Murakami is credited with starting. It developed from Poku, (Pop + otaku). Murakami has written that he aims to represent Poku culture because he expects that animation and otaku might create a new culture. This new culture being a rejuvenation of the contemporary Japanese art scene. This is what it is all about to Murakami; he has expressed in several interviews in the last five or six years the frustration that his art has risen from. It is a frustration rooted in the lack of a reliable and sustainable art market in post-war Japan, and the general view of Japanese art in and outside the country as having a low art status. He is quoted as saying that the market is nothing but “a shallow appropriation of Western trends”. His first reaction was to make art in non-fine arts media, but decided instead to focus on the market sustainability of art and promote himself first overseas. This marks the birth of KaiKai Kiki, LLC.
